This is a rare Scottish vinaigrette, circa 1850

with thistle detail to lid and deer horn.

These we’re used in periods of travel.usually used was aromatic vinegar soaked into a sponge. Silver vinaigrette’s would be gilded where the sponge would touch the metal to avoid corrosion. Note this vinaigrette’s building on opening the lid.

During the 19th century they were an indication of social ranking in the fashion scene. To use perfume in a vinaigrette was a display of wealth rather than the using the vinegar.
