Cameo is the Italian word that means to engrave. From the Arabic word “Kamea” which means charm or amulet. Folklore says that the mystic property of cameos is to attract happiness, health and good fortune in life. For wealthy English Victorians the “Grand tour” was de rigueur and Italian cameos were the one must-have item with which they would return home. In no time the English no longer had to travel to acquire cameos, they were imported. Queen Victoria succumbed to cameos and wore them routinely, starting a trend to women both sides of the Atlantic.
